Delhi has experienced an extraordinary monsoon season this year, with the national capital recording a significant 56% increase in rainfall compared to the seasonal average. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi’s primary weather station at Safdarjung registered 913.1 mm of rain so far, well above the normal figure of 586.9 mm.

An Unpredictable July and August

Despite fewer rainy days in July, the city witnessed heavy downpours concentrated over just two or three days, which played a major role in boosting the overall rainfall. August, however, brought a more consistent pattern, with a greater number of rainy days contributing to the overall increase in precipitation.

Rains Lash the Capital

On Tuesday, rains lashed several parts of south and central Delhi, bringing some relief from the sweltering heat. Despite the rain, the maximum temperature in the capital remained relatively high, reaching 35.4 degrees Celsius—1.9 degrees above the normal. Relative humidity levels also surged, fluctuating between 85% and 100% throughout the day.

With rains continuing, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) reported several rain-related incidents. Seven complaints were registered, including four for waterlogging and three for fallen trees, highlighting the challenges posed by such heavy rainfall.

More Rain in the Forecast

Looking ahead, the weather department has predicted more rain for the capital. A generally cloudy sky with moderate rainfall is expected on Wednesday, with temperatures likely to range between 33 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius.

A Monsoon to Remember

This year’s monsoon has been one of the wettest in recent memory for Delhi, and with more rain on the horizon, it’s clear that the season is not over yet. As the capital grapples with rain-related challenges like waterlogging and tree falls, residents are bracing for what the rest of the monsoon may bring
